How to Start a Tradition of Watching 80s and 90s Movies at Home with Your Children

Even if being a parent is a full-time job, it may still be enjoyable. Every chance to socialize with others is turned down by our family a few times every month. My husband and I curl up on the couch and show our kids some of our favorite films from the 1980s and 1990s.

I'm providing some of our best advice so that you can start your own Throwback Movie Tradition because it has grown into a full-fledged tradition that our entire family looks forward to. And I'm collaborating with NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® to discuss our preferred movie-night treat.

OUR FAVORITE MOVIE NIGHT SNACK

It's no secret that the Simply Delicious Snack Bar Dough by NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® has become a household favorite. These chewy, delectable snack bars are baked at home (it only takes 10 minutes), and only real ingredients are used.

Everyone who has tried these at our place, from neighbors to family and friends, is now adding them to their weekly grocery list. They're that delicious.

HOW TO CREATE A 1980’S AND 90’S MOVIE NIGHT TRADITION WITH YOUR KIDS

#1 – GET THE KIDS INVOLVED IN SNACK PREP

I'm not always sure which gets my kids more thrilled, the movie or the treats.

NESTLÉ®, Toll House®, Simply Delicious Snack Bar Dough is now a part of our tradition. The ideal fresh-out-of-the-oven movie snack are these delectable Break and Bake snack bars.

Better still? They are self-made by Miles and Alice.

They merely cut them into slices, spread them out on baking trays, and bake them for 10 minutes. This is ideal as it will keep them occupied while my husband and I decide which movie to watch.

Simon and Dad choose the Simply Delicious Snack Bar Dough Chocolate Chip with Toasted Oats, while Alice and Miles prefer the Simply Delicious Snack Bar Dough Cranberry Walnut with Dark Chocolate.

For my part, I simply adore the fact that they are produced with real, premium ingredients, allowing me to feel good about what I'm feeding my family.

#2 – TURN YOUR KIDS INTO MOVIE CRITICS
My husband and I have found that some of the movies from our youth are not exactly what we remember. In fact, some of them are a little bit boring – especially to little kids.

I made worksheets for movie reviews to combat boredom. For each child, I print out a worksheet on which they can record their favorite and least favorite elements.

If the movie isn't their favorite, they might take notes as they watch, but other times they might put off viewing until the very end because they're so enthralled.

It's safe to say that What About Bob was our kids' favorite show. All of them awarded it five stars and begged to watch it repeatedly.

#3 – DON’T FORGET ABOUT RATINGS
It turns out that PG-13 wasn't even invented until 1984, and even then it was only used occasionally. We discovered this the hard way when we randomly started playing PG movies from the 1980s and discovered some scenes that weren't exactly proper.

Now that I know better, I make care to read online reviews to be aware of any language or unsavory conduct that I may not remember. Even yet, we frequently have the remote at the ready in case we need to skip forward to a specific scene or pause the film to discuss anything with the kids.

Similarly to What About Bob? Bob is attempted to be blown up by the doctor. Although we probably didn't need to reiterate this to our children, doing so made us feel like better parents.

#4 – HAVE FUN CHOOSING THE MOVIE
The hardest part, if you're anything like us, will be choosing which throwback movie to watch first. The majority of the movies our children have seen thus far have been adored by them, but I have to admit that Gremlins and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids weren't their favorites.

And it's probable that after watching 10 minutes of the Gremlins movie, my youngest didn't sleep in his own bed for months. Observe the entire ranking system I explained earlier?

Here are some recommendations for movies from the 1980s and 1990s that we have seen with our children, intend to watch with them this fall and winter, or will watch when they are a bit older.
