Review of Virgin River Season 4: An Improvement in Every Way

There are spoilers for Virgin River Season 4 below, which is currently streaming on Netflix.

Virgin River's Season 4 is an improvement over Season 3 in almost every aspect, managing to strike the difficult balance between dramatic and sentimental. Though some of the cliffhangers were still on the verge of being excessive and some storylines were harder to care about than others, overall the season feels like a win. This is thanks to Annette O'Toole's return as Hope, which frees up the show from having to focus entirely on Mel and Jack's drama.

Not only because of how it finishes, though it is a factor as well. With the knowledge that Charmaine did lie and that her children are not Jack's, it will be simpler to wait for the upcoming season. On the other hand, Mel's child is indeed Jack's despite having undergone drive-through IVF. In terms of the proposal, the fact that the second attempt worked suggests that Season 5 may bring about a wedding and a child.

And see, this is the main reason we watch Virgin River. For this kind of fulfillment, we also watch dramas that are tranquil and soothing and that ultimately center on couples loving one another despite their challenges. for couples that keep together no matter what, for neighbors who support one another. Of course, we also keep an eye out for folks addressing their concerns and pals who don't excuse one another. And good for Mel and Jack, who despite some anxiety have now realized that moving forward as a team is the best option.

As we discuss Virgin River Season 4, let's speak about what worked, what didn't, and what we want to see next.

WHAT WORKED

Mel and Jack

Season 3 saw Mel and Jack function in a way that wasn't always the case. This is a result of both the way their tale has developed naturally and how this season's design has allowed the show to concentrate on them as individuals. It is simpler to get invested in the main couple's romance when there are two distinct individuals in each of them.

The absence of any significant couple-related drama was also helpful; even the baby matter was handled as maturely as possible, even while the show was focusing on Jack's problems. At this point, Jack and Mel have made the decision to be together, therefore all external concerns are just that: external issues they will deal with as a couple. It's encouraging to watch as they enter a season that will hopefully bring them many victories.

Hope’s return

As the saying goes, "absence makes the heart grow fonder," and we didn't realize how much we'd miss Hope until after she was gone and the chasm she left was obvious. She was missed for her position in the community and, yes, in Jack and Mel's lives, as well as for who she is and her relationship with Doc (which, this season, also truly worked, not only with Hope).

However, Annette O'Toole's return was handled flawlessly, and the series actually provided the actress with a ton of material to showcase her talent in Season 4. Despite the fact that we still missed seeing her interact with the other characters, we wouldn't exchange the journey that Hope, Doc, and we the viewers have taken. Instead, we simply desire to see Hope more frequently in the midst of all the storylines in Season 5.

The way the show handled grief

Virgin River Season 4 was very aware of the fact that grief is a cunning thing and operates according to its own set of laws. The show pays tribute to everyone who lost someone during the epidemic by allowing Hope to mourn Lily in her own time and manner. Because loss is difficult, but the kind of loss the world has recently had to deal with—one that is accompanied by separation—is a unique kind of pain. Even while Hope's experience wasn't precisely that, it was close enough that everyone who has lost a loved one can find some solace in her story.

Brie and Brady

These two never cease to amaze us. We won't mince words. At times, we thought this relationship had to end and that the show was creating a love triangle, or at least the foundation for one, but they kept coming back, and now, we have to say, we're a little split. because Brady and Brie work well together. Even if we are still not at the stage where we can say with certainty that this is what must occur, we are more accepting than we initially anticipated given the direction the novels took with this plot.

Jack’s PTSD

One of the reasons the show was successful was because of this, which may be the season's most significant plotline. His PTSD was introduced early in the series and was never forgotten, but it was also never fully explored until this season. Trauma doesn't precisely follow a pattern like sorrow does, and we all have to deal with our own in our own ways, but watching Jack battle, suffer, and attempt was not only tremendously powerful from a storytelling perspective, but also very satisfying. Although we almost always require expert assistance to get out of the holes we dig for ourselves, trauma need not dominate us. And that's a fantastic lesson for the program.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK

Ricky and Lizzie

Virgin River has really battled to arouse our genuine interest in these two. They lack flavor and are generally boring, so the idea of the program spending a lot of time on them seems more like a job than anything else. Ironically, both are primarily effective when they engage with other characters; nevertheless, as a couple, they don't really stand out from the crowd of other couples we've seen.

The back and forth with Preacher

The storyline of Preacher changed from working to not working to working once more, and this back-and-forth affected Preacher as a whole. He deserves some quiet time and the family that he is obviously seeking. Next season, please give this man some peace and quiet. Let's not worry about whether or not someone will eventually point a gun at him throughout the season. It's time for the show to allow him completely explore the things that make him happy, once and for all. He genuinely shone when he got to be a buddy and when the focus was on his needs and wants. The main drama is over.

Cameron

Why even was he present? He was a good person, but what was the point of him when no one was ever going to support him over Jack and we weren't even supporting him against Doc? It wasn't like he was so horrible; he was just low-key drama. All things considered, he really didn't contribute much, especially since Mel was in the majority of his sequences. There was nothing particularly exceptional about Cameron, despite the fact that he centered all of his problems on her and her friendship with Jack. No one will miss him.

WHAT WE WANT TO SEE NEXT

This one is very simple: a baby and a wedding the following season! Mel and Jack have arrived; they're so close to realizing their dreams, and as those who have followed their narrative, we deserve to witness it. to delight in. No time jumps, no major events occurring off-screen. We want to feel scared and pleased for them, and we want to see the wedding and Mel's pregnancy.

Now that it's been established the twins aren't Jack's, the rest of the community sincerely hopes we never get to see Charmaine again. I hope to never see you again and bid you adieu. Additionally, since everyone seems to have forgotten Hope is the mayor, we would really love to see more of Hope and Doc together. Finally, we hope that we get to witness how Hope, Doc, and the entire community will be supporting Mel as she moves on. Season 5 has the opportunity to really focus on the idea that the program works best when it's about people caring for one another.
